Burn Rehabilitation
Severe burn scars can limit a person’s
everyday activities. Burn rehabilitation is vital to the physical, emotional,
social, and functional rehabilitation of patients who have suffered burns and
other severe wounds. Involvement begins early on with participation in therapies
that optimize outcomes and continues throughout the burn survivor’s hospital
stay.
Occupational and Physical Therapists
contribute to the interdisciplinary team, helping with adult and pediatric burn
survivors’ treatment. Short and long-term goals are developed to reduce the
amount of skin tightening and make sure the best range of motion is maintained.
The aim of burn rehabilitation is to return the individual to the best possible
independent living.
Immobilization, stiffness, scarring and
tightening are challenging issues during a patient’s burn rehabilitation.
Treatment is often a long process and success depends on patient and family
awareness, understanding and involvement. Depending on the extent of a person's
injury, there are many possible components to the burn survivor's
rehabilitation. During all phases of care, burn rehabilitation may include:
-
Exercise therapy to improve or maintain range of motion, strength, and
flexibility.
-
Splinting to prevent contractures and help heal wounds.
-
Scar management including fitting of pressure garments.
-
Functional mobility training.
-
Activities of daily living retraining.
