Meet the Executive Board
Jim Aparicio – President
Jim joined the San Jose Fire Department in 2001. Prior to SJFD, Jim was a Fire Engineer for California Department of Forestry (CDF) in Auburn, CA. Jim has been an instructor for the SJFD academy since 2004. He has worked as a Firefighter at Engine 17, and both Truck and Engine 14. Jim was promoted to Fire Captain in 2011 and currently works at Station 35 in southern San Jose. On his off time he is also an instructor for the South Bay Regional Fire Academy. Jim has been an active member of the Burn Foundation since 2009.
Kim Borreson – Vice President
Kim Borreson started in EMS in 1990 working for Freedom Fire. He joined San Jose the Fire Department in 2002. For the next 13 years, Kim served as a Firefighter Paramedic and FTO. In July 2015, Kim promoted to Fire Engineer and currently works at Station 4. Kim has 2 grown children and currently lives in Santa Cruz.
Dave Bartels – Co-Treasurer
Dave Bartels is a Bay Area native that joined the San Jose Fire Department in 2017. He currently works as a Firefighter Paramedic at Station 14. Prior to joining the San Jose Fire Department, Dave worked as a Paramedic in San Francisco as well as an EMT and Firefighter for fire departments on the peninsula. Prior to his career in EMS and Fire, he worked in commercial real estate in San Francisco. Dave holds a Bachelor's degree from UC Davis in Economics. He lives in San Jose with his wife and two children and feels blessed to be able to have a career that serves the community in which he lives. As a Trustee for the Burn Foundation, Dave looks forward to furthering that effort. In his off time, he enjoys staying active outdoors and spending time with his family and friends.
Mike Hidalgo – Co-Treasurer
Mike Hidalgo has proudly served as a Firefighter Paramedic with the San Jose Fire Department since 2009. Mike currently works at Station 35 on Truck 35 in the southern part of the City. Prior to working for the San Jose Fire Department, he worked in Santa Clara County as a Paramedic with Rural Metro Ambulance. Mike grew up in Truckee and is a graduate of San Jose State University, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business/ Finance. Mike enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and running.
Jamie Kerin – Secretary
Jamie has been a member of the San Jose Fire Department since 1997. Jamie was promoted to Fire Captain in May 2017. Prior to joining SJFD, Jamie graduated from California State University, Hayward with a Degree in Political Science. Jamie has been a member of the Burn Foundation since 2013 and currently serves as a Trustee. In addition to being a member of the Executive Board, he is also a Burn Survivor. The exceptional care and kindness provided by Valley Medical's Burn Center team inspired him to join the Foundation.
He personally became acutely aware of the many challenges burn survivors face each day on the road to recovery. Jamie has attended Burn Camp, the Heroes Charity Gala and has been an active member updating technology at for the eight-bed Burn Unit at VMC. Jamie resides in the Sacramento Valley with his wife and their two young boys. In his spare time, Jamie enjoys coaching little league, camping and fishing with his family. As a Firefighter, the Burn Foundation gives him the opportunity to give back to the community.
Mike Moses – Seargent-At-Arms
Mike was hired into the San Jose Fire Department as a Firefighter in 2006, promoted to Fire Engineer in 2009 and Fire Captain in 2016. Mike currently works at Station 6 and is an alternate Special Operations ARFF member at the San Jose International Airport. Prior to joining SJFD, Mike was a Paid On-call Firefighter with a local agency. Mike joined the Burn Foundation in 2010 and has served as a Trustee and Sergeant at Arms. Mike is responsible for the Burn Foundation’s Facebook page and the Website. He is an active member at Burn Survivors Kids Camp, Survivors Family Picnic and the American Heroes Charity Gala. Mike has his Bachelors Degree and is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer.
Jeff Alvarado – Trustee
Jeff has worked with the San Jose Fire Department since 2007. Jeff worked as a Firefighter/Paramedic for over 7 years and recently promoted to Fire Engineer. Jeff grew up in San Jose and attended Willow Glen High School. He lived in Tahoe for 6 years and has trained in avalanche safety. Jeff loves the cooking, being outdoors, snowboarding in the backcountry, surfing and long walks on the beach. Currently, Jeff lives in San Francisco and enjoy riding his bike to Marin headlands.
Chris Cobillas – Trustee
Chris Cobillas is a San Jose native who joined the San Jose Fire Department in 2009. Chris worked at Station 26 as a Firefighter for five years. After promoting in 2018, Chris returned to Station 26 as a Fire Engineer. He is very active in the local San Jose community, including volunteering with the Burn Foundation and playing softball on a SJFD team. Chris also enjoys spending time with his family, wife Carol and two children.
Corey Condren – Trustee
Corey joined the San Jose Fire Department in 2014 and is currently the Firefighter/Paramedic on Engine 2. Prior to joining SJFD, she was a paramedic for AMR/RM for 4 years. She holds a BA in Political Science from Cal Poly SLO and is currently working on her Master’s degree in Public Policy. She feels blessed to have found a career that gives back to the community in so many ways. When not at the station, she is also involved in the San Jose Fire Explorer Program, SJFD recruitment, and multiple charity fundraising events. In her free time, Corey enjoys international travel and visiting with family and friends.
Moses Salas – Trustee
Moses Salas was hired with San Jose Fire Department as a Firefighter/Paramedic in 2017. Moses was born and raised in San Jose and had his heart set on being a Firefighter and even joined the San Jose Fire Explorers as a teen. Before joining with SJFD, he worked for Cal Fire (Santa Clara Unit) and then went on to become an EMT for Santa Clara County EMS. When Moses is not working, he spends his time playing softball, hiking, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.
Josh Staley – Trustee
Josh joined the San Jose Fire Department in 2004 as a Firefighter Paramedic and worked downtown at Station 8. Josh promoted to Fire Engineer in 2008, Captain in 2013, and Battalion Chief in 2021. Josh joined the Burn Foundation as a Trustee in 2015. In his off time, Josh enjoys his classic Chevy Impala and spending time with his wife, three kids and dog, Jameson.
Joe Zavattero – Trustee
Joe started his career with SJFD in 2007 and worked at Station 8 downtown as an Fire Engineer for the past 5 years. Joe recently promoted to Fire Captain in 2021 and is very active member of the San Jose Fire Department. He started his career as a Reserve Firefighter with Pismo Beach Fire Department and completed his Paramedic training in Santa Barbara. Joe enjoys surfing, running and camping with his wife and two daughters.
Kara Danielson – Trustee
Kara Danielson has been with the San Jose Fire Department since 2006 and is currently a Captain at Station 7. She grew up in Fremont, California and graduated Sonoma State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology and also has her Associates Degree in Fire Technology. Kara has served as a committee member for the Firefighter Injury Outreach Program, South Bay Incident Management Team, Fire Recruit Academy Assistant Coordinator and is an active member of the San Jose Firefighter’s Burn Foundation. Kara has attended several Burn Survivor Kids Camps and attended the National Burn Camp in Washington DC. Kara volunteers at the Annual American Heroes Charity Gala and attends the Survivors Family Picnic.
Wes Barone – Representative
Wes Barone was born and raised in San Jose and ever since a very young age, he knew that he wanted to grow up to be a Firefighter just like his father. While attending Archbishop Mitty High School, he was a cadet with the San Jose Fire Explorer Post 888 program. After graduating, he went to further his knowledge, education, and skills in the profession by attending Butte College Fire Academy and Paramedic Program. After working 3 years with Cal Fire, Wes was hired by the San Jose Fire Department in 2016 and has worked as a Firefighter Paramedic for the past 5 years. As a child, Wes remembers attending Burn Foundation events with his family as well as other SJFD community service events. After attending his first Burn Camp in 2018, Wes knew that he wanted to be a part of the Burn Foundation.
Casey Brosnam – Representative
Casey Brosnan has been with the San Jose Fire Department for 8 years and currently works as a Fire Engineer at Station 18. Casey loves his job and serving his community. Casey is extremely proud to be part of the San Jose Burn Foundation and have always felt that it is our duty as Firefighters to help those who have been burned and injured in fires so that they may go on to live normal lives, but also to share their stories of bravery and perseverance. Casey is married and they have 3 sons. we have 3 sons. Casey enjoys golf, coaching T-ball, playing the guitar, going to the beach, and practicing rough carpentry.
Di-an Duong – Representative
Di-an Duong joined the San Jose Fire Department in 2019 and is currently a Firefighter on Engine 6. Born and raised locally, she has always had a passion in giving back to her community. She holds a B.S. in physiology and neuroscience from UCSD where she spent time volunteering in the oncology department as well as getting involved with various charity groups. Outside of work, she also has a big place in her heart for sports and fitness. She continues to thrive as an athletic trainer/nutritionist and a high school rugby coach.
Joe Guerrero – Representative
Joe Guerrero was born and raised in San Jose. He joined the San Jose Fire Department in 2015 and currently works as the FF/PM on E2 for the C Shift. Joe was introduced to the Fire Service while attending Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. While working towards his degree in Agricultural Business, he was able to take introductory firefighting classes through the College of Forestry. Joe joined the department after volunteering in Mt. Shasta and working as a seasonal firefighter in Marin County. He learned about the Burn Foundation while working with many of its Members who were always passionate and dedicated to doing all they can to assist and support Burn Patients, as well as, those who care for and support them. In his free time, Joe loves Bay Area sports, particularly, the Sharks and the Giants. He can be found playing softball tournaments with the SJFD team, golfing, or spending time with family.
Ben Hammond – Representative
Ben Hammond was hired by the San Jose Fire Department in 2019 as a Firefighter. Prior to joining SJFD, Ben was Paid Call Firefighter for a local department and EMT on the ambulance. Ben lived overseas for several years developing community service programs for high school and college students. Ben has a Bachelor's Degree in Spanish and a Masters in Race, Ethnicity and Conflict. Ben lives in Santa Cruz and enjoys spending his free time outdoors with his wife and daughter.
Zeeyad Kousa – Representative
Zeeyad Koussa was hired by the San Jose Fire Department in 2015 as a firefighter paramedic and currently works at station 35 on the engine. Prior to joining the fire department Zeeyad worked on the ambulance as an EMT and then paramedic for 6 years. He is excited to be able to give back to the community by joining the burn foundation and assisting with their mission in providing support to burn survivors and remaining a 100% volunteer organization. In his spare time Zeeyad enjoys skateboarding, jiujitsu and spending time with his 2 children.
Billy Tyson – Representative
Billy Tyson was hired with San Jose Fire Department as a Firefighter/Paramedic in 2017. He currently works as a Relief Paramedic and is an alternate member on the Special Operations Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Team. Billy was born and raised in San Jose and attended Santa Teresa High School. He has his Bachelors degree from San Jose State and lives in San Jose with his family.
Scott Coscarelli – Advisor
Scott was born and raised in San Jose and always dreamed of being a Firefighter. For over six years, he worked as an EMT, then Paramedic while going to school. After earning his college degree, he was hired by the San Jose Fire Department in 1998 as a Firefighter/Paramedic. Scott worked as a Fire Engineer from 2003 to 2014, and was promoted to Fire Captain in 2014. Scotts was promoted to Deputy Chief in 2020 and is currently responsible for EMS and Training. Scott has been a volunteer for the Burn Foundation for over ten years and held the Treasurer position for six years from 2010 to 2016. When not working, Scott and his wife, along with their twins, enjoy traveling, camping, and spending time with friends.
Ben Naranjo – Advisor
Ben has been a proud member of the San Jose Fire Department since 1997, and promoted to Fire Engineer in 2000. Prior to joining the SJFD, Ben worked as a wildland firefighter for the California Department of Forestry (CDF) in Santa Cruz County. Ben has a degree in Fire Science from Cabrillo College. Ben enjoys mountain biking, traveling, and attending Burn Survivors Kids Camp. He also looks forward to spending time with his wife, a San Jose Fire Department dispatcher and his son, a UC Berkeley graduate. Go Bears!
Matt Tuttle – Advisor
Matt joined the San Jose Fire Department in 2008 as a Firefighter Paramedic. He promoted to Fire Engineer in 2014 and to Captain in 2021. Prior to joining the San Jose Fire Department, Matt was a Volunteer Firefighter for four years at a local fire department. Matt also teaches firefighter skills at the South Bay Fire Academy and paramedic skills at NCTI. Matt went to Bellarmine College Preparatory and graduated from Santa Clara University with a Bachelor's Degree in History. Matt currently lives in San Jose with his wife and three children.
